Earlier in the week I caught up with Fred Destin, General Partner at Accel in London and one of the most prominent figures in the U.K
. technology scene.
In what turned out to be a pretty candid interview, we discussed a range of topics including the main reasons startups fail and founders get fired; how Fred analyzes the VC/Founder relationship (with what he calls ‘founder intimacy’); his experience as a board member and investor at rocketship, Deliveroo, and why most VCs are assholes.
Destin also talked about his early days working at Atlas Venture in Boston, compared the US and European venture scenes, and discussed why he believes all business plans are poetry with the business model working well prior to investment being crucial.
“If you’re running a business in 2016, you need to be thinking about Snapchat as a channel to grow your customer base. Period.” says Gary Vaynerchuck, who runs VaynerMedia, one of the world’s hottest digital agencies. Vaynerchuck was at CES 2016 and spent most of his time Snapchatting in Vegas and spoke to corporations about how the ghost can provide value to their followers. In his article about why snapchat matters, he talks about how snapchats are real moments which is personal and that can really help shape your brand or business.
I think the main question that comes to our minds after hearing about a social media platform that is seemingly creating a lot of hype – how can I use it to benefit my business? is it worth my time and energy to figure out how it works along with the gazillion other social media platforms?
We had a good lengthy discussion on what’s this Snapchat all about on a DJ Facebook message board. Alex Nepa, owner of Mint DJ Events and a club DJ in State College, PA, has been using Snapchat since it started and is a big fan of it, “I use it to show my human side. My pugs, a quick shot from the club, a funny blurb. etc.” In order to monetize from it, he suggests to “Just be yourself. Showcase what you’re doing, give it a little more attitude than you would with other mediums.” He also adds that it is more relevant to teen/college crowds and nightlife, rather than wedding clients.
Brandon Lindsey of Hey! Mr. DJ in Cincinnati doesn’t use it yet, but is intrigued to dig further to see if it’s worth his time. “The way I see it right now is, it’s a combination of Periscope and Instagram in one app. For example, you can do a snapchat story… heading to an event, the setup, at the event, maybe the thank you’s at the end. It’s more personal feeling live,” states Lindsey.
Yet, not all DJs feel like they have to jump on every new marketing tool in this digital age to promote their business, “My old man was a contractor. Never had a business card. Had to turn away more work than he could take on. Somehow word got around that he was really good and reliable. I feel that we are following in his footsteps. The pressure to always be marketing and selling is enormous. When you don’t have to worry about all that, a lot of time to actually work on the product opens up,” says Doug Scholten, or better known as DJ Toad, Owner of Toad Productions based in Cincinnati.
A big question that pops up into people’s heads with any social media outlet is how to gain followers. Well, it’s simple. Tell people how to find you. Post quality content. Tell a creative story.
Chris Romero, Owner of Cutmaster Music in Albuquerque, NM makes a solid point on why it’s a good idea to try out the “it” tools of the social media world, “I think advertising is like your stock portfolio. Better diversify to have a solid impact on your biz. If you put all your eggs in one social media outlet, you’re probably going to miss out and it’s super risky.” Romero also suggests hiring an assistant, or ‘media guru’ as he puts it, to help with posts so you can focus on the DJ/MC work at events.
So if you had never heard about Snapchat, you’re welcome for bringing you up to speed in 2016. Or if you have signed up and not sure what to do with it, I hope you know now. Or if you are so pumped after reading this amazing informative blog and can’t wait to get snapchatting, I wish you happy creative storytelling.
